Beauty and the Beast (2017)-Critic
If you haven't read the part one of this article or seen the movie: SPOILERS AHEAD.
It was a good movie, or should I say musical... I'm not usually a fan of musicals, I find them kind of obnoxious but when it's a Disney princess movie, there's usually songs involved. I get that sometimes a song can describe or set the tone better than a regular dialogue would, but sometimes it's just too much. I have to say, the music was beautiful and the songs were beautiful, so I guess it wasn't so bad after all! If you read the part one article about the movie, you probably know that changes were made from the original Disney animated tale and in my mind those changes we much needed. We learn a lot more about the prince (Dan Stevens), there is one part at the beginning of the movie where they tell the same story as the original movie but elements are added throughout the story, we learn that the reason he became a horrible prince is because he was simply raised badly by his father. I think it's an important element to add since, without that information, it wouldn't make sense that someone so deeply selfish would change so drastically. Belle (Emma Watson) is quite smart in both movies but in the second one, she teaches others her inventions because in the live adaptation she makes inventions or at least she's always one step ahead of her father's inventions. She always was, one of the most modern princesses of the book but in the movie, she's much more honest and direct about what she wants, much more rebellious. Which is refreshing to see that maybe Hollywood is finally getting a clue about how to portray women correctly, not as a week and helpless tool but as a strong and independent human being. There are a few gaps in the story, Lumière (Ewan McGregor) was the only character with a French accent, the others all have a strong British accent. The movie is set in France so it would be logical that all characters had a French accent or at least none of them. I understand why they made the movie in English, most of the world's population speaks that language but they should've been more consistent. There are also changes in the casting, there are more black people. Now there are more black characters but it's not like there's a lot more, just one more than the original cast. I definitely think that there could've been more colored characters because it definitely makes a difference to young girls who could identify with characters of their favorite movie. Another community was brought to light, the LGBTQ+ community. LeFou was confirmed as a gay character notably in love with his "idol" and "friend" Gaston. I think that it's great to include this community because, as much as princess movies are kind of historical, they should include LGBTQ+ characters because they did exist. The Younger generation can relate to this character. The movie is full of magic, therefore, CGI (computer-generated imagery) was required for the movie o be as realistic as possible. The effects were beautiful and probably as realistic as it can get. There were so many details and even when the images were dark, and it was nighttime for example, we could still see everything clearly. There were effects in most of the scenes and I know this could be a deal-breaker to some people but once you get in the Disney spirit, and let your innocence guide you through the movie, it's great.
There were flaws in this movie, but then again, no movie is perfect!
